MS. LULA’S JOURNEY WITH ALZHEIMER’S

About Ms. Lula

Ms. Lula is a proud mother of 7 children (one who died shortly after birth) and 10 grandchildren. She raised them all in a small town, Sumter SC. She was married for 56 years before the passing of her husband, Lawrence Vaughn back in 2012. She worked at Campbell Soup for over 25 years, retired at age 55 and now earns $1.67 for retirement.

Her journey with Alzheimer’s was truly noticeable after her husband’s passing. She continued to live alone for several years. Then she got lost as she went to visit friends (something she’s done for years), withdrew $2500 from her bank account and couldn’t remember doing it, and often wore the same clothes over and over looking disheveled. Her daughter hired a caregiver to assist her. She was very resistant to the caregiver coming because she felt she didn’t need any help. The final straw was when she was in her bedroom frantically packing to go home to see her father (who had been dead for over 25 years). She walked out of her home and down the street when a neighbor noticed her looking very strange. The police were contacted and they called one of her sons.

After about a year, she came to stay with her youngest daughter, her caretaker, in San Diego. She has been with her for over 3 and 1/2 years now. Please read her detailed journey in her blog.
