Ms. Lula’s Day Out - Balboa Park

Ms. Lula always had a green thumb. She grew a plant in anything! She would go to a friend’s house, see a plant she liked, and ask the friend to “break her off a piece”.

Then, she would come home, propagate it, then grow the plant into a beautiful piece of art. Ms. Lula would grow her plants in anything she could find; a large coffee container, an old toy dumpster truck, even an old toilet.

One day, he had my dad procure an old tub in hopes of filling it with plants. She never got to that project.

With her love of plants, I couldn’t wait to take her to one of my favorite parks here in San Diego; Balboa Park. It is a rich park filled with beautiful gardens; a Japanese Friendship Garden, a Botanical Garden, a Rose Garden, and much much more.

I took her when she first arrived. She did enjoy herself but tired easily. I took her again a bit later using the transport chair. By that season of her life, she was more easily agitated and less interested, but I was still glad to have spent that time with her.

Now, the thing she most enjoyed doesn’t seem to spark joy any longer. She doesn’t even have any interest in going outside and put her hands in the dirt. I’m a bit surprised at this. Oh well...I’ll always have the memories!
